My Relationship With Media
Before beginning my adventure in this class I felt I already a good understanding of media and how most of it worked and was portrayed. However after joining this class my eyes were opened to how little of an understanding, I truly have into the insight of media and the effort and time it takes to string these movies along. Some things I was unaware of were things were things like Mise-en-scene and the effect it had as well as the purpose of low angle shots and other cuts. Another way I have been influenced by this class was the way i view and appreciate movies. Like previously mentioned I had a general idea of how the process of making movies was a complicated and grueling process, but I was unaware of the exact elements and the roles. Something I found interesting were the roles that the cinematographer and editor due to my lack of understanding on them and the actual definition of their roles. I first learned this in the beginning of the school year which instantly made me want to learn more about everything that media had to offer. When it comes to the consumption of media this class as completely warped my perspective for the better because I am now able to recognize new aspects of film that never crossed my mind before, this allows me to enjoy film and media in a new way. Me being able to recognize these new film aspects is related to my progress in Media Studies. Within my Media Studies class there have been a few challenging obstacles but nothing that I haven't been able to overcome. However there have also been plenty of assignments that were interesting and also a big learning opportunity as well. Something I found fun was a our recent unit test where we analyzed the Genre Conventions of a Scar Face Trailer and broke them down and explained how they were portrayed in the trailer. For me this was a very fun way to show what we had learned and was a very good progress check. Another activity we completed was a poster attached to a film analysis of each movie genre where my group was given the gangster genre to analyze and present to the class. This helped me improve my knowledge on the matter because I did not want to mess up in front of the class, as well as the fact my team Relied on me. This assignment wasn't too challenging but also helped me to push to complete on track with my team members. Since joining this class my favorite was definitely learning about how big of a role lighting plays on the overall feel of a shot. Overall, the class has been a very eye opening experience for me about media and I'm looking forward to learning more.
